ENG 431

New Holland ENG 431 – Engine Control Module (ECM) / Engine Controller (ENG): Hand Throttle (STD cab) Idle Validation Switches are both closed.

Issue description

The hand throttle assembly contains idle validation switches that tell the engine computer whether the throttle is at the idle position or off-idle. By design, these switches operate inversely—when one is open, the other must be closed. If the controller detects that both switches are closed at the same time, it indicates an illogical state, usually caused by a short circuit in the wiring harness or an internal failure of the throttle switch mechanism.

Applies to these machines

  • New Holland T7 series
  • New Holland T8 series
  • New Holland T9 series
  • New Holland TG series

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness running from the hand throttle assembly to the Engine ECM for pinched wires, chafing, or melted insulation.

  2. Perform a switch continuity test by disconnecting the hand throttle connector and testing the pins with a multimeter while moving the throttle lever (switches should alternate states and never both be closed).

  3. Turn the key ON (engine off) and check the harness side of the connector for the proper 5-volt reference and ground supplied by the ECM.

Repair steps

  1. Park the machine on a level surface, turn off the ignition, and disconnect the negative battery cable.

    This prevents electrical damage.

  2. Remove the necessary trim panels on the right-hand console or armrest.

This provides access to the base of the hand throttle assembly.

  3. Disconnect the wiring harness connector from the hand throttle potentiometer/switch unit.

  4. Repair the damaged section of the harness using proper soldering and heat-shrink techniques.

Perform this step if the diagnostic tests pointed to a wiring short.

  5. Unbolt the mounting hardware securing the hand throttle assembly to the console bracket and remove the unit.

Perform this step if the switch itself is faulty.

  6. Install the replacement hand throttle assembly and tighten the mounting bolts.

  7. Plug in the electrical connector, ensuring the locking tab clicks into place.

  8. Reinstall the console trim panels and reconnect the battery.

  9. Turn the ignition on and use the tractor's diagnostic display or a service tool to clear the inactive ENG 431 fault code.

Test the throttle lever to ensure the engine responds correctly and the code does not return.

The exact part number for the hand throttle assembly varies heavily depending on the specific tractor model, cab configuration (Standard vs. Armrest), and transmission type (e.g., Power Shift vs. Manual Shift). You must verify the correct part number using the machine's PIN/serial number in the CNH parts catalog before ordering.
