New Holland ENG 441 – Engine Controller / Engine ECU (ENG): Battery Voltage is too Low (less than 6 volts)

The system voltage supplied to the engine controller has dropped below the critical 6-volt threshold. When voltage drops this low, the electrical system cannot provide enough power for the machine to function properly. This often results in cold-start failures, communication loss on the CAN bus, and the inability of transmission clutch solenoids to engage.

   Perform a static battery test by measuring the voltage at the battery terminals with the machine off

   Perform a load test or cold start test to verify if the battery drops below the 6-volt threshold under heavy load

   Inspect battery cables and chassis/engine ground connections for corrosion or looseness

   Check the alternator output at the main charge terminal with the engine running to ensure it is properly charging the system

   Measure the voltage directly at the Engine ECU supply pins to determine if the voltage drop is happening in the wiring harness rather than at the battery

   Clean Connections

   Disconnect the negative battery cable, followed by the positive cable. Use a wire brush to thoroughly clean the battery terminals, cable ends, and the main chassis ground connection until bare metal is exposed. Reconnect and tighten securely.

   Replace the Battery

   If the battery fails a load test or drops below 6 volts while cranking, remove the battery hold-downs, extract the old battery, and install a new heavy-duty agricultural battery.

   Repair Wiring

   If the battery is healthy but the voltage at the ECU is low, trace the wiring harness from the battery to the Engine ECU. Look for chafed wires, melted insulation, or corroded connectors. Splice and repair damaged wires or replace the affected harness section.

   Replace the Alternator

   If the battery is good but the charging system fails to maintain voltage, disconnect the battery, remove the serpentine/drive belt, disconnect the alternator wiring, and unbolt the alternator. Install the new alternator, re-tension the belt, and verify charging voltage.

   Clear Codes

   Cycle the key and use a diagnostic tool to clear the ENG 441 fault code.
