New Holland ENG 443 – Engine Controller (ENG / ECM): Decelerator or Hand Throttle (STD cab) 5 Volt Supply voltage is too low.

Issue description

This indicates that the 5-volt reference circuit supplying the hand throttle (or decelerator) position potentiometer has dropped below the acceptable voltage threshold. This is typically caused by a short to ground in the sensor's wiring harness, a failed potentiometer pulling the voltage down, or a fault within the controller's internal 5V regulator.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness running from the hand throttle potentiometer to the Engine ECU for pinched wires, chafing against the steering column/dash framework, or melted insulation.

  2. Disconnect the hand throttle potentiometer, turn the key to the ON position (engine off), and measure the voltage at the 5V supply pin on the harness connector. If it reads ~5V, the potentiometer has an internal short. If it reads significantly less than 5V, the issue is in the wiring harness or ECU.

  3. With the battery disconnected and the ECU harness unplugged, test the 5V supply wire for continuity and check for continuity to ground. Repair any shorts found.

  4. If wiring tests perfectly but voltage is still low, test the 5V output directly at the Engine ECU pins to determine if the controller has a hardware failure.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Access the Sensor

    Remove the dash panels or side console covers required to access the base of the hand throttle lever.

  3. Remove the Potentiometer

    Unplug the electrical connector from the hand throttle potentiometer. Remove the retaining screws or mounting bracket holding the sensor to the throttle linkage.

  4. Install the New Sensor

    Mount the replacement potentiometer to the linkage assembly. Ensure the physical alignment matches the mechanical idle position.

  5. Reconnect and Reassemble

    Plug the electrical connector back in and reinstall the console/dash panels.

  6. Calibrate (If Required)

    Reconnect the battery. On many New Holland models, you must run the "H" routine transmission/throttle calibration via the instrumentation display or the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) so the ECU can learn the new potentiometer's minimum and maximum voltage values.

  7. Clear Codes

    Clear the ENG 443 fault code and test the throttle operation.
