ENG 449

New Holland ENG 449 – Engine Control Module (ECM): Fuel Pressure level has exceeded the warning limit

Issue description

The Engine Control Module (ECM) has detected that the measured fuel rail pressure is above the commanded fuel rail pressure by a calibrated limit. This can be caused by a sudden loss of fuel pressure regulation, a restricted fuel return line, a malfunctioning fuel rail pressure sensor, or a blow-shut condition in the CAPS pump.

Applies to these machines

  • TG210
  • TG230
  • TG255
  • TG285
  • T7.270
  • TN Series
  • CR8.90Z

Check the cause

  1. Visual Inspection for Tampering: Check the fuel pressure sensor circuit for extra spliced wires, cut braiding, or a missing weather seal on the connector.

  2. Return Line Restriction Check: Inspect the drain line path of the fuel pressure relief valve for restrictions or obstructions. A restriction in the fuel-drain-to-tank return line prevents unneeded fuel from exiting the system, causing pressure spikes.

  3. Fuel Tank Venting: Loosen the fuel cap to see if a vacuum is being pulled on the tank, which indicates a venting issue.

  4. Sensor Accuracy Check: Verify the fuel rail pressure sensor accuracy using an electronic service tool (like INSITE). Warning: Ensure the high-pressure fuel rail is completely depressurized (wait at least 10 minutes after shutdown) before loosening any fittings.

  5. Relief Valve Check: Determine if the fuel pressure relief valve is failing to open or regulate pressure.

Repair steps

  1. Key Off

Turn the keyswitch to the "OFF" position and allow the high-pressure fuel system to depressurize completely (at least 10 minutes).

  2. Wiring Repair

If tampering or damage was found on the fuel pressure sensor harness during diagnostics, remove extra wires, repair the harness, or replace the missing weather seal.

  3. Clear Restrictions

If the fuel-drain-to-tank return line is restricted, clear the obstruction or replace the damaged fuel return line.

  4. Component Replacement

If the fuel pressure relief valve is stuck closed and failing to regulate pressure, replace the valve. If the fuel pressure sensor is reading inaccurately, replace the sensor. If the issue is isolated to a "blow-shut" condition in the CAPS fuel injection pump, the accumulator module must be replaced, or the pump must be sent to a New Holland ReCon facility for repairs.

  5. Validation and Code Clearing

Connect all components and the electronic service tool. Turn the keyswitch ON, start the engine, and let it idle for 1 minute. Verify that Fault Code 449 has changed to "Inactive". Use the service tool to erase all inactive fault codes.
