ENG 451

New Holland ENG 451 – Engine Control Unit (ECU / ECM): Fuel Pressure Sensor voltage is too high

Issue description

The engine control module is receiving a voltage signal from the fuel rail pressure sensor that exceeds the normal or expected operating range. This usually points to a short circuit to a higher voltage source, an open ground circuit in the sensor wiring, or an internal failure of the sensor itself. When this code is active, the engine may experience low power, reduced performance, or enter a derate mode to protect the system.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the fuel pressure sensor and its electrical connector for physical damage, corrosion, or moisture intrusion.

  2. Trace the wiring harness from the sensor back to the engine controller (checking pin A46 if applicable) and look for chafed wires causing a short to power (+12V or +5V) or a broken ground wire.

  3. Using a multimeter, verify the 5V reference voltage, the ground circuit integrity, and the signal wire voltage at the sensor connector.

  4. Look for accompanying codes (such as ENG 452 - voltage too low, or ENG 449 - pressure exceeded warning limit) to isolate if the issue is a fluctuating wiring short or a true pressure problem.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the ignition and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Locate the Sensor

    Locate the fuel pressure sensor, which is threaded directly into the high-pressure fuel rail.

  3. Disconnect

    Carefully unplug the 3-pin electrical connector from the sensor.

  4. Harness Repair (If Applicable)

    If your diagnostic checks revealed a short or open circuit in the wiring, repair the damaged section of the engine harness or replace the harness entirely.

  5. Sensor Replacement (If Applicable)

    If the wiring is intact, the sensor itself has failed. Unscrew the old sensor from the fuel rail.

  6. Installation

    Thread the new sensor into the fuel rail (using appropriate thread sealant if specified by your exact engine's manual) and tighten it to the OEM torque specification.

  7. Reassembly

    Reconnect the electrical connector, ensuring it clicks securely into place. Reconnect the battery.

  8. Verification

    Start the engine and visually check the fuel rail for any high-pressure fuel leaks. Use a diagnostic tool to clear the ENG 451 fault code and test run the machine to ensure the code does not return.
