New Holland ENG 452 – ENGINE: Fuel Pressure Sensor voltage is too low

Issue description

The ECM detects that the signal voltage returning from the fuel rail pressure sensor has dropped below the normal operating range (typically below 0.31 VDC). This condition forces the engine into a power or speed derate and is usually caused by a short circuit to ground on the +5-VDC supply wire, a shorted signal wire, a failed sensor, or a short in another component sharing the same 5-volt reference circuit.

Check the cause

  1. Visual Wiring Inspection: Inspect the engine wiring harness at or near the fuel rail pressure sensor connector for broken wires, missing weather seals, or damaged insulation (diagnosing wiring damage or internal breaks).

  2. Voltage Supply Check: Disconnect the sensor and turn the keyswitch ON. Measure the voltage of the +5-VDC supply pin from the ECM (diagnosing a short circuit to ground on the supply or signal wires).

  3. Shared Circuit Check: Disconnect other sensors on the same +5-VDC circuit one by one. If the voltage returns to normal, another component is shorted to ground (diagnosing a shared circuit short).

  4. Signal Voltage Check: Using a breakout cable, measure the signal voltage. If the wiring is intact and the voltage remains below 0.31 VDC, the sensor itself has failed (diagnosing internal sensor failure).

Repair steps

  1. Turn off power

    Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.

  2. Disconnect harness

    Disconnect the engine wiring harness from the fuel rail pressure sensor.

  3. Inspect connector

    Inspect the connector pins for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-back pins.

  4. Repair wiring

    If wiring damage is found near the connector (a highly common failure point), repair the wiring harness using an approved OEM electrical repair connector/pigtail.

  5. Remove sensor

    If the wiring harness tests perfectly but the sensor is shorted internally, remove the faulty fuel pressure sensor from the fuel rail/control housing.

  6. Install sensor

    Install the new fuel pressure sensor and reconnect the engine wiring harness.

  7. Clear fault codes

    Turn the keyswitch ON and connect an electronic service tool (such as the Jaltest or Cummins INSITE tool) to clear the inactive fault codes.

  8. Validate repair

    Start the engine and let it idle for at least 1 minute to validate the repair. Verify that the Check Engine lamp turns off and the fault code status changes to INACTIVE.
