Issue description

This indicates that the engine control system is commanding changes in fuel pressure based on engine load and speed, but the actual pressure reading from the pump remains static.

Check the cause

  1. Check Fuel Pressure Sensor Voltage: Verify the fuel pressure sensor circuit. Related codes (ENG 451, ENG 452, ENG 482, ENG 546) indicate that sensor voltage can drop too low or spike too high. A faulty sensor will send a static or incorrect reading to the ECU.

  2. Test the Fuel Lift Pump: Ensure the low-pressure lift pump is supplying adequate fuel to the high-pressure pump (related code ENG 278 indicates lift pump failure).

  3. Inspect the Injection Control Valve / Pumping Control Valves: Perform a 'click test' on the front and rear pumping control valves. Related codes (ENG 271, 272, 273, 274) indicate that the current to these valves can be out of range, shorted, or open, which would prevent the pump from adjusting pressure.

  4. Check for Fuel Contamination: Verify the water-in-fuel sensor (ENG 418, ENG 428, ENG 429) to ensure contaminated fuel hasn't damaged the pump internals.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect power

    Disconnect the battery/power supply before servicing the fuel system.

  2. Inspect wiring harness

    Inspect the wiring harness connecting the Engine Controller to the fuel pressure sensor and the injection control valve for chafing or shorts. Repair any damaged wiring.

  3. Replace Fuel Pressure Sensor

    If the wiring is intact but the sensor voltage is out of range, relieve the fuel system pressure and replace the Fuel Pressure Sensor.

  4. Replace Fuel Pump

    If the sensor is functioning properly but the pump cannot physically change pressure, replace the Fuel Lift Pump or the High-Pressure Fuel Injection Pump (depending on which component failed the pressure/current tests).

  5. Clear fault codes and verify

    Clear the fault codes from the Engine Controller and run the machine under varying loads to verify the fuel pressure now changes with operating conditions.
