New Holland ENG 465 – ENG (Engine Control Module / Engine ECU): Wastegate 1 voltage is too high

Issue description

This code indicates that the Engine Control Module (ECM) is receiving a voltage signal from the turbocharger's electronic wastegate actuator (or its position sensor) that exceeds the maximum expected threshold. A "voltage too high" condition typically points to a short to power in the wiring harness, a loss of ground, or an internal short/failure within the wastegate actuator itself.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness leading from the Engine ECU to the turbocharger wastegate actuator for chafed wires shorting to a 12V or 5V power source.

  2. Disconnect the wastegate actuator plug and check for water intrusion, corrosion, or bent pins, which can bridge circuits and cause high voltage readings.

  3. Using a multimeter, test the signal wire at the actuator connector (with the key ON, engine OFF) to verify if it is shorted to power, and perform a voltage drop test on the ground circuit (a bad ground causes high signal voltage).

  4. Check the physical wastegate linkage on the turbocharger for seizing or jamming due to carbon buildup, which can cause the actuator to over-amp or push the sensor out of range.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Access the Turbocharger

    Locate the turbocharger assembly and the attached electronic wastegate actuator.

  3. Remove the Actuator

    Disconnect the electrical harness connector from the actuator. Remove the retaining clip (e-clip or c-clip) securing the actuator rod to the wastegate valve linkage. Remove the mounting bolts securing the actuator bracket to the turbocharger housing.

  4. Install the New Part

    Mount the replacement wastegate actuator, reattach the linkage rod, and secure it with a new retaining clip.

  5. Reconnect Wiring

    Plug the electrical connector back into the actuator.

  6. Clear Codes and Calibrate

    Reconnect the battery. Use a CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the ENG 465 fault code. Depending on the specific FPT engine model, a relearn or calibration procedure may need to be run via the diagnostic tool so the ECM can learn the new actuator's end-stops.
