New Holland ENG 466 – ENG: Wastegate 1 voltage is too low

Issue description

The engine control module is receiving a voltage signal from the turbocharger's electronic wastegate actuator (or its position sensor) that falls below the minimum acceptable threshold. This condition is typically caused by a short to ground in the wiring harness, a disconnected plug, or an internal failure of the electronic wastegate actuator itself.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness leading to the turbocharger Wastegate 1 actuator for chafed wires, melted insulation from exhaust heat, or a disconnected plug

  2. Disconnect the wastegate actuator harness and check for water intrusion, bent pins, or corrosion inside the connector

  3. Turn the key to the ON position (engine off) and use a multimeter to verify that the actuator is receiving the proper 5-volt reference signal and has a solid ground

  4. Test the pins on the wastegate actuator itself to determine if the internal potentiometer/sensor has shorted out

  5. Disconnect the actuator arm and verify that the physical wastegate valve on the turbocharger moves freely to ensure a seized flap is not burning out the motor

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Wiring Repair

    If a short to ground or broken wire was found during diagnostics, splice and repair the wiring harness using heat-shrink connectors, or replace the damaged pigtail section.

  3. Actuator Replacement

    If the actuator failed the electrical test, remove the retaining clip securing the actuator rod to the wastegate valve. Remove the mounting bolts holding the actuator to the turbocharger compressor housing. Install the new actuator, secure the mounting bolts, and reattach the linkage arm with a new retaining clip. (Note: On some VGT/electronic turbochargers, the actuator is calibrated to the turbo and cannot be purchased separately; the entire turbocharger assembly must be replaced).

  4. Reassembly

    Reconnect the electrical harness to the actuator.

  5. Calibration & Clearing

    Reconnect the battery. Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the inactive ENG 466 fault code. Some electronic wastegates may require a relearn/calibration procedure via the EST software so the ECU learns the new end-stops.

  6. Test Run

    Start the engine and run it under load to verify that boost pressure is within normal parameters and the code does not return.
