New Holland ENG 486 – Engine Control Module (ENG / ECM): Rear Fueling actuator underfueling

The Engine Control Module (ECM) has detected that the rear fueling actuator is not providing enough fuel to the rear bank of cylinders (typically cylinders 4, 5, and 6). This is specific to engines with a dual-bank fueling system that utilizes separate front and rear fueling and timing actuators.

   Inspect the engine wiring harness and the connector at the rear fueling actuator for open circuits, shorts to ground, or chafed wires.

   Swap the front fueling actuator with the rear fueling actuator and perform a Cylinder Performance Test. If the fault follows the actuator, the actuator is defective. If it remains on the rear bank, suspect a leaking injector or harness fault.

   Perform an Injector Leak Test (Bubble Test) by mounting a leak test adapter on the rear fueling actuator port. Excessive bubbles indicate one or more fuel injectors in the rear bank are leaking compression into the fuel system.

   Power Down

   Turn off the key switch and disconnect the battery to ensure safety before working on the fuel system or ECM wiring.

   Address Wiring Issues

   If the diagnostic checks revealed a damaged supply or return wire between the ECM and the rear fueling actuator, repair the wiring or replace the engine harness.

   Replace the Actuator

   If the swap test proved the actuator is faulty, remove the defective rear fueling actuator from the fuel control housing. Clean the mounting surface (do not use abrasive sand/glass beads) and install the new actuator, torquing it to OEM specifications.

   Replace Leaking Injectors

   If the bubble test indicated leaking injectors, remove the valve cover and replace the faulty injector(s) on the rear bank.

   Validate Repair

   Reconnect the battery, cycle the key, and start the engine. Let it idle for at least 1 minute. This allows the ECM to run its continuous diagnostic; if the issue is resolved, the fault code status will change to inactive.

   Clear Codes

   Use your electronic service tool to clear the inactive fault codes from the ECM memory.
