New Holland ENG 488 – Engine Control Module (ECM): Intake Manifold Temperature level has exceeded the warning limit.

The engine control system monitors the temperature of the air entering the engine via the Intake Manifold Temperature Sensor. If the intake air temperature exceeds a calibrated safe threshold, the system logs this code. This is a critical engine protection feature; when this code is active, the engine will typically enter a derate mode or initiate a protective shutdown to prevent internal thermal damage.

   Check engine compartment temperatures to ensure they are not excessively high (above 200°F / 93.3°C) and verify the sensor is not near an unshielded heat source like a cracked exhaust manifold.

   Inspect the charge air cooler (intercooler) fins for mud, chaff, or debris that could prevent cooling of the intake air.

   Test the Intake Manifold Temperature Sensor resistance using a multimeter and compare the reading to the OEM specification.

   Inspect the sensor's electrical connector and wiring harness for chafing, melting, or corrosion.

   Turn the machine's key switch to the 'OFF' position and allow the engine to cool completely.

   Locate the Intake Manifold Temperature Sensor.

   Depending on the engine model, it is typically located on the side of the intake manifold towards the rear of the cylinder head, or on the top half of the intake manifold at the front.

   Disconnect the electrical harness plug from the sensor.

   Unthread and remove the faulty sensor from the intake manifold.

   Install the new Intake Manifold Temperature Sensor and tighten it to the engine's specified torque.

   Reconnect the electrical harness plug.

   Turn the key switch to the 'ON' position, connect an electronic service tool (such as the CNH EST), and clear the inactive fault codes.

   Start the engine, monitor the intake manifold temperature data on the service tool or dash, and verify that the fault code does not return.
