New Holland ENG 492 – Engine Control Module (ECM): Wastegate 2 voltage is too low
Issue description
The Engine Control Module (ECM) has detected that the signal voltage from the turbocharger wastegate 2 control circuit (or actuator position circuit) has dropped below the calibrated minimum threshold. This typically indicates a short to ground in the wiring, an open circuit, or an internal failure of the wastegate actuator itself.
Applies to these machines
5 machines- TG210
- TG230
- TJ275
- TJ325
- combine harvesters
Check the cause
Inspect the engine wiring harness and connectors between the ECM and the turbocharger wastegate 2 actuator for physical damage, chafing, corrosion, or pushed-out pins
Disconnect the wastegate actuator and verify the sensor supply voltage at the connector using a multimeter (should read a 5V reference from the ECM)
Verify ground return continuity from the sensor connector back to the ECM ground
Test the signal wire between the actuator and the ECM for an open circuit or a short to ground
If the wiring, 5V supply, and ground are all within specification, the fault is likely an internal short or failure within the wastegate actuator itself
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn the key switch to the OFF position and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes during repair.
Wiring Repair
If the diagnostic checks revealed a short to ground or an open circuit in the harness, repair the damaged wiring or replace the affected harness section.
Actuator Replacement
If the wiring tests good, the wastegate actuator has failed. Unbolt the faulty turbocharger wastegate actuator from its mounting bracket and disconnect it from the wastegate linkage. Install the new actuator and secure the linkage.
Reassembly
Reconnect the electrical harness to the actuator and reconnect the battery.
Validation and Clearing
To validate the repair, perform a key cycle, start the engine, and let it idle for at least 1 minute. Connect your Customer Electronic Service Tool (EST) or equivalent diagnostic scanner. The fault code status should now display as INACTIVE. Use the 'Reset All Faults' command to clear the code from the ECM's history.
