ENG 529

New Holland ENG 529 – Engine (ECM) Controller: Output B driver shorted high or open

Issue description

The Engine Control Module (ECM) has detected an electrical fault on the circuit designated as "Output B." Specifically, the ECM's internal driver for this output is seeing either an open circuit (a break in the wiring or a disconnected component) or a short circuit to a high voltage source (typically a short to battery power).

Check the cause

  1. Use a CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) or compatible CAN-bus diagnostic scanner to verify if the code is active or stored.

  2. Visually inspect the engine wiring harness leading from the Engine ECM to the machine's actuators and relays. Look for chafed insulation, pinched wires, or signs of melting.

  3. Disconnect the ECM harness connectors and inspect the pins. Look for pushed-back pins, corrosion, or moisture intrusion.

  4. Test the 'Output B' circuit for continuity to ground to check for an open circuit.

  5. Test the circuit for voltage with the key ON (engine off) to check if it is improperly shorted to a 12V/24V power source.

  6. Ohm-test the specific relay coil or actuator controlled by Output B to ensure it does not have an internal open or short.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Disconnect the machine's battery negative terminal before performing any electrical repairs to prevent further ECM damage.

  2. Consult Wiring Diagram

    Refer to your specific model's service manual wiring schematic to identify exactly which component is driven by the ECM's "Output B" pin.

  3. Repair Wiring

    If a break or short is found in the harness during the diagnostic phase, cut out the damaged section and splice in new wire using weather-sealed heat-shrink connectors.

  4. Replace Component

    If the wiring is intact but the actuator/relay on the Output B circuit failed its resistance test, replace the faulty component.

  5. ECM Replacement (Worst Case)

    If the harness and the component both test perfectly, the internal driver inside the Engine ECM has likely burned out. The ECM will need to be replaced and flashed with the correct machine software.

  6. Reassembly and Clearing

    Reconnect the battery, turn the key ON, and use a diagnostic tool to clear the ENG 529 fault code. Run the engine to verify the code does not return.
