New Holland ENG 551 – Engine Control Module (ECM): Hand Throttle (STD cab) Idle Validation Switches are both open

The Engine Control Module (ECM) is simultaneously detecting voltage on both idle validation signal pins (typically pins 25 and 26 of the machine harness). Because the idle validation switches are designed so that one should be closed while the other is open depending on the throttle position, detecting an "open" state on both simultaneously indicates a fault. This condition is usually caused by a throttle potentiometer that has fallen out of alignment, a disconnected/damaged wiring harness, or an internally failed idle validation switch.

   Inspect the hand throttle wiring harness and connectors inside the cab for physical damage, corrosion, or backed-out pins

   Check the idle validation switch circuit specifically at pins 25 and 26 of the engine controller/machine harness for continuity and proper voltage

   Verify if the throttle potentiometer is simply out of physical alignment on its mounting bracket

   Use an electronic service tool to monitor the idle validation switch states (IVS1 and IVS2) while moving the hand throttle. If the signal does not change smoothly or drops out, the potentiometer/switch assembly is likely faulty.

   Power Down

   Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts during testing.

   Access the Hand Throttle

   Locate the hand throttle assembly inside the cab console and disconnect its 3-terminal electrical harness connector.

   Inspect and Clean

   Inspect the connector pins for corrosion or push-out. Clean the contacts with electrical contact cleaner.

   Test the Potentiometer

   Test the hand throttle potentiometer and idle validation switches with a multimeter. If the resistance values are erratic, out of specification, or the switches remain open regardless of the lever's position, the component has failed internally.

   Recalibrate (If not failed)

   If the component tests fine electrically, the issue is likely alignment. Realign the throttle potentiometer on its linkage and perform a throttle calibration procedure using the tractor's electronic service tool or onboard display.

   Replace the Component

   If the potentiometer/switch assembly is failed, remove the mounting hardware securing it to the hand throttle lever assembly, install the new potentiometer, and reconnect the harness.

   Final Calibration

   Reconnect the battery, turn the key on, clear the inactive fault codes, and recalibrate the new throttle control so the ECM learns the correct idle and full-throttle voltage parameters.
