ENG 553

New Holland ENG 553 – Engine Control Module (ECM): Front fueling actuator overfueling

Issue description

The ECM has detected that the fuel rail pressure reading in the front bank (Rail 1) is unexpectedly higher than the commanded fuel rail pressure. If the actuator sticks or the system is restricted, pressure spikes, causing the engine to derate, run rough, or shut down.

Applies to these machines

  • T9 Series
  • T8000 Series
  • CR9090
  • CX8080 Elevation
  • CX8090 Elevation

Check the cause

  1. Check for air in the pressure-side fuel lines with the keyswitch OFF

  2. Measure fuel drain line restriction (must be less than 4.0 in Hg)

  3. Inspect fuel filters for high restriction, which can cause pressure anomalies

  4. Inspect the front fueling actuator wiring harness for shorts to ground or open circuits

Repair steps

  1. Turn the keyswitch OFF.

  2. Bleed the fuel system.

If air was found in the fuel system during diagnostics, bleed the system and check for suction-side leaks.

  3. Clear drain line restrictions.

If the drain line restriction measured higher than 4.0 in Hg, locate and clear the blockage in the fuel return/drain lines.

  4. Replace the Front Fueling Actuator.

If no air is in the fuel and there is no drain line restriction, the front fueling actuator is likely mechanically damaged or stuck open. Remove the actuator from the fuel delivery housing and install a new one.

  5. Validate the Repair.

Connect all components and turn the keyswitch ON. Start the engine and let it idle for 1 minute.

  6. Clear Codes.

Using the electronic service tool (e.g., Cummins INSITE or New Holland EST), verify that Fault Code 553 has changed to INACTIVE. Erase the inactive fault codes.

Parts you might need

(3)
  • Front Fueling Actuator

Exact OEM part numbers vary heavily depending on the specific engine CPL

  • Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor

If the sensor is reading falsely high, it may need replacement

  • Fuel Filters

Always replace fuel filters when opening the fuel system
