New Holland ENG 581 – Engine Control Module (ECM): Fuel inlet Pressure Sensor voltage is too high.

The Engine Control Module (ECM) is receiving a signal voltage from the fuel inlet pressure sensor that exceeds the maximum expected threshold. This typically points to an open circuit on the sensor's ground wire, a short to voltage, or an internal failure of the sensor itself.

   Visual Inspection: Turn the key OFF. Disconnect the sensor and inspect the connector pins for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-back pins. Inspect the wiring harness for chafing or melted insulation.

   Ground Circuit Test: Using a multimeter, check for continuity to ground on the sensor's ground pin. An open ground is the most common cause of a 'voltage too high' code.

   Reference Voltage Test: Turn the key ON (engine off). Measure the supply pin to ensure it is receiving a steady 5V reference from the ECM.

   Signal Wire Test: Check the signal wire for a short to the 5V supply or a 12V source.

   Sensor Verification: If the 5V supply is present, the ground is solid, and the signal wire is not shorted, the sensor has failed internally and must be replaced.

   Depressurize

   Ensure the engine is turned off, the key is removed, and the fuel system has had time to depressurize.

   Disconnect

   Unplug the electrical harness connector from the fuel inlet pressure sensor.

   Remove

   Using the appropriate wrench or deep socket, carefully unthread the faulty sensor from the fuel housing or fuel line. Have a shop rag ready to catch any residual fuel.

   Install

   Thread the new replacement sensor into the port by hand to prevent cross-threading, then tighten to the OEM torque specification.

   Reconnect

   Plug the electrical connector back into the sensor, ensuring the locking tab clicks into place.

   Clear and Verify

   Turn the key ON, use a diagnostic tool to clear the ENG 581 fault code, and start the engine. Check for fuel leaks around the new sensor and verify that the code does not return under load.
