Issue description
This is an electrical circuit fault. It indicates that the signal voltage returning from the Fuel Inlet Pressure Sensor to the computer has dropped below or exceeded the acceptable operating threshold (typically below 0.5V or above 4.5V on a 5V reference circuit). This usually points to an open circuit (unplugged sensor/broken wire), a short circuit, or a complete internal failure of the sensor itself, rather than a mechanical fuel pressure issue.

Check the cause
Visually inspect the Fuel Inlet Pressure Sensor (3-wire sensor near the low-pressure fuel pump, fuel filter housing, or fuel control module) connector for water intrusion, corrosion, or pushed-out pins.
Inspect the wiring harness between the sensor and the Engine ECM for chafing, melted insulation, or pinch points that could cause a short to ground or voltage.
Disconnect the sensor and perform a voltage test with the key ON (engine off) using a multimeter to verify the sensor is receiving a 5V reference from the ECM and has a solid ground.
Check the continuity of the signal wire from the sensor connector back to the ECM pin.
If the 5V reference, ground, and signal wires all test good, the sensor has failed internally and must be replaced.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn the ignition OFF and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent any accidental shorts or damage to the ECM during repair.
Disconnect
Unplug the electrical connector from the Fuel Inlet Pressure Sensor.
Remove Sensor
Clean the area around the sensor to prevent dirt from entering the fuel system. Use a wrench to unthread the faulty sensor from the fuel housing/line. Have a rag ready to catch a small amount of residual fuel.
Install New Sensor
Thread the new sensor into the housing. Torque it to the OEM specification for your specific engine (do not over-tighten, as these are often brass or plastic threads depending on the housing).
Reconnect
Plug the electrical harness back into the sensor, ensuring the locking tab clicks into place.
Clear Codes
Reconnect the battery. Turn the key to the ON position. Use a diagnostic scan tool (such as the CNH Electronic Service Tool) to clear the inactive ENG 583 fault code.
Test
Start the engine and verify that the code does not return and that the engine operates without derating.
