New Holland ENG 595 – Engine Control Module (ECM): Turbo overspeed protection fault
Issue description
This condition occurs when the Engine Control Module (ECM) detects that the turbocharger's rotational speed has exceeded its maximum safe operating limit. The ECM logs this code and typically initiates a protection strategy (such as engine derate or shutdown) to prevent catastrophic mechanical failure of the turbocharger compressor or turbine wheels.

Check the cause
Check for related codes that might point to the root cause, such as ENG 124 (Boost Pressure level has exceeded the warning limit) or wastegate actuator codes like ENG 491 / ENG 492.
Inspect the turbocharger speed sensor and its wiring harness for chafing, corrosion, or loose connections.
Inspect the Variable Geometry Turbocharger (VGT) actuator or the mechanical wastegate to ensure it is not stuck closed or seized in the high boost position.
Inspect for massive intake or exhaust leaks, such as a blown charge-air cooler boot, which can cause the turbo to over-spin.
Verify the Boost Pressure Sensor (MAP) is reading accurately.
Repair steps
Connect Diagnostic Tool
Hook up the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to monitor live data for turbo speed, commanded VGT/wastegate position, and actual boost pressure.
Test the Actuator
Use the EST to manually command the VGT or wastegate actuator to sweep from 0% to 100%. Observe the linkage on the turbocharger. If it binds, grinds, or fails to move, the actuator or the internal turbo vanes are seized.
Isolate the Binding
Disconnect the actuator linkage from the turbocharger. Move the turbocharger's VGT lever or wastegate arm by hand. If the arm moves freely, the electronic actuator has failed and must be replaced. If the arm is seized or extremely stiff, the turbocharger itself is carbon-packed or mechanically damaged and must be replaced.
Inspect/Replace Sensors
If the mechanical components are working perfectly but the ECM is still reading an overspeed condition, remove and inspect the turbo speed sensor. Replace it if the tip is damaged or if it fails a resistance test.
Clear and Test
After replacing the faulty component, clear the ENG 595 code. Perform a loaded test run (e.g., PTO dyno or field operation) while monitoring turbo speed to verify the repair.
