ENG 596

New Holland ENG 596 – Engine Controller / Engine Control Module (ECM): Battery voltage is too high

Issue description

The control module has detected a supply voltage that exceeds the normal operating limit (typically triggering when voltage spikes above 16.2V or 19V). If left unaddressed, this overcharging condition can severely damage the electronic control units and boil the battery.

Check the cause

  1. Stop the engine and ensure no external battery charger or 24V jump-start system is currently connected to the machine, as this will artificially spike the voltage.

  2. Start the engine and use a multimeter to test the actual battery voltage and the alternator output at the terminals. If it reads higher than 15-16 Volts, the alternator is overcharging.

  3. Inspect the battery positive wiring to ensure it is not accidentally shorted to an external higher voltage source.

  4. Check the ECM harness connectors for any shorts to a power source. Inspect the contacts for corrosion or damage.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect battery

    Disconnect the battery negative terminal for safety before beginning electrical repairs.

  2. Remove alternator

    If the diagnostic checks confirmed the alternator is overcharging, the alternator voltage regulator has failed. Remove the alternator drive belt and unbolt the alternator from the engine block.

  3. Replace regulator or alternator

    Depending on the specific alternator model installed, either replace the internal voltage regulator module on the back of the alternator, or replace the entire alternator assembly if the regulator is not serviceable separately.

  4. Reinstall alternator

    Reinstall the alternator and tension the drive belt to the manufacturer's specification.

  5. Clean ECM connector

    Disconnect the ECM connector, clean the harness contacts, and reconnect it securely to ensure no residual wiring shorts exist.

  6. Reconnect battery

    Reconnect the battery negative terminal.

  7. Verify charging output

    Start the engine and verify with a multimeter that the charging system output is now within the normal range (typically 13.5V to 14.5V).

  8. Clear fault code

    Clear the ENG 596 fault code using a diagnostic tool, or cycle the ignition key to allow the system to self-clear if the voltage is now normal.
