ENG 598

New Holland ENG 598 – Engine Controller (Engine ECM / ECU): Battery voltage is very low

Issue description

The voltage supplied to the control modules has dropped below the minimum operating threshold (often below 6 volts on a 12V system), which can prevent the engine from starting, inhibit transmission shifting, or cause the system to shut down to protect electrical components.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the battery for physical damage, leaking acid, or bulging. Check the battery terminals for heavy corrosion or loose connections.

  2. Use a multimeter to measure the voltage directly at the battery terminals.

  3. Test the wire harness for continuity between the battery, the alternator, and the Engine ECU. Look for chafed wires or poor chassis ground connections.

  4. If the machine can be jump-started or started after a charge, test the tractor battery circuit output (alternator output) to ensure it is actively charging the system.

Repair steps

  1. Clean Connections

    Disconnect the battery (negative cable first). Clean the battery posts and cable terminals thoroughly with a wire brush. Reconnect and tighten them securely.

  2. Charge the Battery

    Apply a standalone battery charger to bring the battery up to full capacity. If the battery is deeply discharged (flat), use a slow charging program. Note: Some modern smart chargers will not activate if the voltage is too low; you may need to jump it with a good battery first to trick the charger into starting.

  3. Load Test

    Once fully charged, perform a load test on the battery. If the battery fails the load test or drops voltage rapidly, it has a dead cell and must be replaced.

  4. Repair Wiring

    If the battery is healthy and fully charged but the ENG 598 code persists, trace the wiring harness to the Engine ECM. Repair or replace any damaged wires or corroded ground straps.

  5. Replace Alternator

    If the battery drains repeatedly during operation and the alternator fails the output test, replace the alternator.
