ENG 698

New Holland ENG 698 – Engine Controller: Engine Controller internal temperature too low.

Issue description

The internal temperature sensor located on the printed circuit board inside the Engine Control Module is registering a temperature that is below its acceptable operating threshold. This can occasionally be triggered by extreme environmental cold, but most commonly points to a hardware failure of the internal thermistor/sensor within the controller itself.

Check the cause

  1. Environmental Assessment: Verify the ambient temperature. If the machine is operating in extreme sub-zero conditions, allow the engine and cab area to warm up to see if the code moves from active to inactive.

  2. Live Data Monitoring: Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) and monitor the live data for the ECU's internal temperature. If the reading is highly implausible (e.g., reading -40°C on a warm day), the internal sensor has failed.

  3. Check for Correlated Faults: Look for related CAN receive signal codes or ambient air temperature codes (such as DCU 19677 or P0071) to ensure the ECU is receiving accurate external temperature data. Also, check for ENG 1117 ('Battery voltage too low') to rule out a general power supply issue causing erratic sensor behavior.

  4. Harness Inspection: Inspect the Engine ECU wiring harness and connectors for moisture, corrosion, or poor pin tension, which can cause erratic resistance readings.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Disconnect the machine's battery (negative terminal first) to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Locate the ECU

    Locate the Engine ECU (typically mounted on the side of the engine block or in the cab electronics bay, depending on the machine model).

  3. Remove the ECU

    Carefully release the locking levers on the ECU wiring harness connectors and unplug them. Remove the mounting bolts securing the ECU to its bracket and remove the module.

  4. Install the New ECU

    Mount the replacement or remanufactured ECU and secure the hardware.

  5. Reconnect

    Reconnect the wiring harnesses, ensuring the locking levers are fully seated, then reconnect the battery.

  6. Programming

    Connect the CNH EST diagnostic tool. A new or remanufactured ECU will need to be flashed/programmed with the correct machine configuration, fuel tables, and software payload. Clear the inactive ENG 698 fault code and verify normal operation.
