Issue description

The engine controller has lost the synchronization signal, which typically monitors the timing relationship between the engine's rotational components. This points to a loss of sync between the camshaft position sensor and the crankshaft position sensor (engine speed sensor).

Check the cause

  1. Check for active companion codes (such as ENG 731 or ENG 496) which indicate a mechanical misalignment or a voltage supply issue to the speed/position sensors.

  2. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors for the Camshaft Position Sensor and Crankshaft Position Sensor (Engine Speed Sensor) for shorts, opens, or corrosion.

  3. Verify the physical alignment and mounting of the speed and position sensors.

Repair steps

  1. Replace sensor

    Replace the faulty camshaft or crankshaft position sensor.

  2. Repair wiring

    Repair damaged harness wiring to the ECM.

  3. Correct misalignment

    Correct a physical timing gear misalignment (in rare cases).
