New Holland ENG 983 – Engine Control Module (ECM): Unused A/D input channel out of range

The Engine Control Module (ECM) is detecting a voltage signal on an Analog-to-Digital (A/D) pin that is supposed to be unpopulated or unused in the machine's current configuration. This out-of-range voltage is typically caused by a short circuit in the wiring harness, water intrusion bridging pins, or an internal ECM hardware failure.

   Verify ECM configuration and software calibration using the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to ensure it is not looking for an uninstalled sensor

   Inspect ECM connectors for water intrusion, dirt, or corrosion that could bridge an active voltage pin to an unused A/D pin

   Check for bent or damaged pins on the ECM and the harness connector that might be touching each other

4. 4

   Inspect the engine wiring harness for chafing, melting, or damage where wires might be shorting together

   Clear the fault code and retest; if it immediately returns as an active hard fault and wiring tests good, suspect internal ECM failure

   Power Down

   Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery before unplugging any modules.

   Clean and Repair Connectors

   If moisture or corrosion is found in the ECM connector, thoroughly clean the pins with electrical contact cleaner and apply dielectric grease. Repair any bent pins.

   Repair Wiring Harness

   If a short is found in the harness during visual inspection or multimeter continuity testing, splice and heat-shrink the damaged wires, or replace the harness section if the damage is extensive.

   Update/Flash ECM

   If the wiring is pristine, use the dealer service tool to re-flash the ECM with the latest software calibration to rule out a configuration glitch.

   Replace the ECM

   If the harness is completely intact, the connectors are clean, and the software is correct, the ECM itself must be replaced or sent out for remanufacturing.
