New Holland IC 1015 – IC: Cluster System Voltage: Under Voltage < 11.5 V

Issue description

The voltage being supplied to the instrument cluster has dropped below the minimum operating threshold of 11.5 volts. This typically indicates a weak or failing battery, a malfunctioning alternator that is not charging the system, or excessive resistance (such as corrosion or a loose connection) in the wiring harness supplying power to the cluster.

Check the cause

  1. Battery Test: Measure the resting battery voltage at the terminals. It should be at least 12.4V to 12.6V. Perform a load test on the battery to ensure it can hold a charge.

  2. Charging System Test: Start the engine and measure the voltage across the battery terminals. A healthy alternator should output between 13.5V and 14.5V. If the voltage remains below 12V while running, the alternator is likely failing.

  3. Visual Inspection: Inspect the battery terminals, the negative battery cable, and the chassis ground for heavy corrosion or loose connections.

  4. Wiring & Voltage Drop Test: If the battery and alternator test fine, check the fuses and relays supplying the Instrument Cluster. Perform a voltage drop test along the wiring harness from the power source to the IC module to locate any damaged wires or corroded connectors causing the voltage to drop below 11.5V.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Turn off the machine and engage the battery disconnect switch (if equipped) or disconnect the negative battery cable.

  2. Clean Connections

    If diagnostic checks revealed corrosion, thoroughly clean the battery posts, terminals, and ground connections with a wire brush and battery cleaner. Reconnect and re-test the system.

  3. Replace the Battery (if faulty)

    If the battery failed the load test, remove the hold-down bracket, disconnect the cables (negative first, then positive), and install a new OEM-spec wet battery.

  4. Replace the Alternator (if faulty)

    If the alternator is not charging the system: Disconnect the battery. Relieve tension on the serpentine/drive belt and remove the belt from the alternator pulley. Disconnect the electrical harness and main power cable from the rear of the alternator. Remove the mounting bolts from the alternator bracket and remove the unit. Install the new alternator, torque the mounting bolts to spec, reattach the electrical connections, and reinstall the drive belt.

  5. Clear Codes

    Reconnect the battery, turn the key to the ON position, and verify that the instrument cluster powers up correctly. Use a diagnostic tool or DTC eraser to clear the inactive 1015 fault code from the system.
