New Holland IC 1026 – IC (Instrument Cluster): Hand Throttle Sensor: Out of Range - Short to Power

The control module has sensed a higher-than-normal voltage on the hand throttle input pin (exceeds 5.3 Volts for 5 seconds with ignition on). This indicates a short circuit to a power source in the throttle wiring harness, an internal failure of the hand throttle position sensor, or a failure within the instrument cluster itself.

   Visual Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness from the hand throttle sensor to the Instrument Cluster for chafing, pinched wires, or melted insulation that could cause a short to power.

   Harness Voltage Test: Disconnect the hand throttle sensor. Turn the key ON and use a multimeter to check the signal wire for voltage. If it reads 5V or 12V with the sensor unplugged, the wiring harness is shorted to a power wire.

   Sensor Resistance/Voltage Test: If the harness tests good, back-probe the sensor while plugged in. Verify if the sensor is outputting a steady voltage above 5.3V. If it is, the internal potentiometer has failed.

   Instrument Cluster Check: If the wiring is intact and the sensor is functioning correctly, verify the connections at the Instrument Cluster (specifically checking the throttle input pin, e.g., X-C23 pin 22 on some models).

   Power Down

   Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery ground to prevent electrical spikes.

   Isolate the Fault

   Disconnect the wiring harness from both the hand throttle sensor and the Instrument Cluster (IC).

   Repair Wiring

   If your diagnostic checks revealed a short to power in the harness, trace the signal wire back to the IC. Locate the damaged conductor, repair the wire using weather-sealed connectors, and re-loom the harness.

   Replace Sensor

   If the wiring harness is good, the hand throttle sensor has failed. Remove the mounting hardware securing the hand throttle assembly/potentiometer, disconnect the linkage (if mechanical hybrid), and install the new sensor.

   Reassemble and Clear Codes

   Reconnect all harnesses and the battery. Turn the key ON and operate the hand throttle while monitoring the instrument cluster display to ensure the voltage stays within the normal operating range (typically 0.5V to 4.5V) and the error code is resolved.
