New Holland IC 1045 – IC (Instrument Cluster): Fuel Level Monitoring: Open Circuit

Issue description

The control module is not receiving a valid electrical signal from the fuel tank's sending unit. An "open circuit" means there is a break in the electrical path—this is typically caused by a blown fuse, a disconnected or broken wire in the harness, a corroded connector, or a completely failed internal resistor inside the fuel level sensor itself.

Check the cause

  1. Check the Fuse: Verify that the fuse protecting the fuel gauge/instrument cluster circuit is not blown.

  2. Inspect the Wiring: Visually inspect the wiring harness running from the fuel tank sending unit to the instrument cluster. Look for loose connections, chafed wires, or corroded pins at the connectors.

  3. Test the Sending Unit: Disconnect the sensor and use a digital multimeter to check the continuity and resistance across the fuel level sensor's terminals. If the multimeter reads 'OL' (Open Loop) or infinite resistance, the sending unit has failed internally and must be replaced.

Repair steps

  1. Safety First

    Turn off the machine and engage the battery disconnect switch (or manually disconnect the negative battery cable) to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Locate the Sensor

    Access the fuel tank and locate the fuel level sender unit mounted on the top or side of the tank.

  3. Disconnect Wiring

    Unplug the electrical connector from the sender unit.

  4. Remove the Old Unit

    Remove the mounting bolts securing the sender unit to the fuel tank. Carefully pull the old sender unit out of the tank.

  5. Clean the Surface

    Remove and discard the old gasket. Clean the mounting surface on the fuel tank to ensure no debris falls into the fuel.

  6. Install the New Unit

    Place the new gasket onto the tank, insert the new fuel level sender unit, and secure it with the mounting bolts. Ensure it is tightened evenly to create a proper seal.

  7. Reconnect

    Plug the electrical connector back into the new sensor.

  8. Test

    Reconnect the battery, turn the ignition key to the ON position, and verify that the fuel gauge registers the correct fuel level and that the IC 1045 fault code is no longer active.
