IC 4951

New Holland IC 4951 – Instrument Cluster (IC): Hydraulic Enable (Mechanical Machines) - Hydraulic Interlock Solenoid, Short to Power

Issue description

This fault code indicates that the Instrument Cluster (IC) has sensed a short circuit to another voltage source within the Hydraulic Interlock circuit. The fault becomes active when the ignition is ON, the Hydraulic Enable Commanded state is low, and the Hydraulic Enable solenoid is energized. This condition disables the vehicle's hydraulic functions.

Check the cause

  1. Verify the Fault: Start and operate the machine to confirm the fault code is currently active.

  2. Visual Inspection: Inspect the Instrument Cluster connector (specifically X-C23) and the Hydraulic Interlock Solenoid connections. Ensure all connections are secure, tight, and free of corrosion, abrasion, or physical damage.

  3. Harness Inspection: Trace and inspect the wiring harness from the Instrument Cluster to the Hydraulic Interlock Solenoid. Look for pinched wires, melted insulation, or incorrect attachments.

  4. Voltage Test: Test the circuit for a short to another voltage source. If the voltage measurement on the ground/control circuit is greater than 0.5 V when it shouldn't be, a short to power is confirmed.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Turn the ignition switch OFF. Locate the battery and disconnect the negative cable first, followed by the positive cable, to prevent electrical arcing.

  2. Repair the Harness (If Applicable)

If the diagnostic voltage test revealed a short to power in the wiring harness, repair the damaged section of the wire or replace the harness entirely.

  3. Replace the Solenoid

If the wiring harness tests perfectly fine, the short is likely internal to the Hydraulic Interlock Solenoid itself. Remove the old solenoid from the hydraulic control valve and install a replacement. Reconnect the battery and retest the machine.

  4. Replace the Instrument Cluster (If Applicable)

If the fault code persists after verifying the harness and temporarily replacing the solenoid, the Instrument Cluster (IC) has an internal fault and must be replaced.

  5. Clear Codes

Use the Electronic Service Tool to clear all fault codes. Start the machine and operate the hydraulic enable function to confirm the elimination of the fault.
