New Holland IC 5503 – IC (Instrument Cluster): Hydraulic Enable (Mechanical Machines) - EH Aux Output: Short to Power

Issue description

The system has detected that the output circuit controlling the Electro-Hydraulic (EH) Auxiliary Hydraulic Enable solenoid is shorted to a power source (12V). This means voltage is present on the circuit when the controller is not commanding it, which prevents the machine from properly engaging or disengaging the hydraulic functions.

Check the cause

  1. Turn the key ON and verify if the fault code is currently active or stored in history

  2. Check the wiring harness between the Instrument Cluster (IC) and the hydraulic enable solenoid for a shorted wire (chafing against a 12V source)

  3. Disconnect the solenoid to see if the short is internal to the solenoid coil or in the wiring

  4. If the wiring and solenoid test good, verify if the failure mode is an internal short within the Instrument Cluster (IC) or a communication conflict with the UCM

Repair steps

  1. Safeguard the Machine

    Turn off the ignition, lower the boom (if possible), and disconnect the battery negative cable before probing sensitive modules.

  2. Locate the Solenoid

    Locate the Hydraulic Enable / Loader Pilot Interlock solenoid, which is typically mounted on the pilot valve block.

  3. Inspect Connectors

    Disconnect the harness from the solenoid. Inspect the connector for water intrusion, corrosion, or bent pins that could bridge the power and signal wires.

  4. Test for Short to Power

    Reconnect the battery. With the key ON (engine OFF) and the hydraulic enable switch OFF, use a multimeter to measure voltage at the signal wire on the solenoid connector. If 12V is present, there is a short to power in the harness or the IC.

  5. Isolate the Harness

    Disconnect the harness at the Instrument Cluster (IC). Measure the wire again. If the voltage disappears, the IC has an internal short and must be replaced. If the voltage remains, the wiring harness is shorted to another power wire somewhere in the loom.

  6. Repair Wiring

    Trace the harness to find the melted or chafed section. Repair the damaged wire(s) using OEM-approved heat-shrink connectors, or replace the harness section.

  7. Test the Solenoid

    Check the resistance of the solenoid coil. If it is internally shorted, replace the solenoid.

  8. Clear and Verify

    Reconnect all components, clear the fault codes via the instrument cluster, and test the hydraulic enable switch to confirm normal operation.
