New Holland IC 9405 – IC (Instrument Cluster): CAN Time Out - Loss of DM1 from UCM

Issue description

The Instrument Cluster (IC) has lost communication with the Universal Control Module (UCM) over the Controller Area Network (CAN) bus. Specifically, the cluster is failing to receive "Diagnostic Message 1" (DM1) data packets from the UCM within the expected timeframe, indicating a break in communication, a wiring failure, or a module failure.

Check the cause

  1. Verify the unswitched and switched 12V power supplies and ground circuits going to both the Instrument Cluster and the UCM.

  2. Inspect the CAN High and CAN Low wiring harness between the IC and the UCM for rubbed wires under the cab, shorts to ground, or open circuits.

  3. Inspect the harness connectors at the UCM and the back of the Instrument Cluster for loose, corroded, or pulled-out pins.

  4. Check the CAN terminating resistors (often located near the engine bay and behind the cab/cluster). Older active wedge-style terminators are notorious for broken internal solder joints.

  5. Connect the New Holland Electronic Service Tool (EST) to ping the UCM and determine if it is completely offline or if the issue is intermittent.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Battery

    Always disconnect the negative battery cable before servicing CAN bus electrical components.

  2. Harness Repair

    If the diagnostic checks reveal a short or open circuit in the CAN lines between the IC and UCM, repair the damaged wiring or replace that section of the harness.

  3. Replace Terminators (If Applicable)

    If the machine has the older, problematic active terminators, replace them with the updated 2-wire passive resistor terminator plugs.

  4. Test the System

    Reconnect the battery, turn the key on, and check if the UCM comes back online and the IC 9405 code clears.

  5. Replace the UCM

    If the wiring, terminators, power, and grounds are all perfectly intact but the UCM still fails to broadcast DM1 messages, the UCM has suffered an internal hardware failure and must be replaced.

  6. Flash the New Module

    Install the new UCM. You must use the New Holland Electronic Service Tool (EST) to flash/program the new UCM so it recognizes the specific machine's configuration (e.g., electro-hydraulic controls, HVAC settings, etc.).
