Issue description

This code indicates a communication failure on the Controller Area Network (CAN) bus. Specifically, the Instrument Cluster (IC) has stopped receiving the expected Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) inducement status messages from the Electronic Diesel Control (EDC). This is typically caused by a wiring issue, a CAN bus network disruption, or the engine controller failing to broadcast the signal.

Check the cause

  1. Verify EDC Power and Ground: If the Engine ECU (EDC) loses power or ground, it will drop off the CAN bus, causing the IC to log a timeout. Check the main engine fuses and relays.

  2. Check for Accompanying Codes: Look for other CAN timeout codes (e.g., 14901 - Engine controller not present). If multiple modules are timing out, the entire CAN bus may be down.

  3. Inspect the CAN Bus Wiring: Visually inspect the wiring harness between the EDC and the Instrument Cluster for chafing, pinch points, or rodent damage.

  4. Test CAN Resistance: With the battery disconnected, measure the resistance across the CAN High and CAN Low pins at the diagnostic connector. A healthy CAN bus should read approximately 60 ohms. A reading of 120 ohms indicates a missing terminating resistor or a broken wire.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts during testing.

  2. Inspect Connectors

    Locate the EDC (Engine ECU) and the Instrument Cluster. Disconnect the main harness connectors at both modules.

  3. Clean and Reseat

    Inspect the connector pins for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-back pins. Clean the contacts with an approved electrical contact cleaner and allow them to dry. Apply a small amount of dielectric grease and firmly reseat the connectors.

  4. Perform Continuity Testing

    Using a multimeter, test the continuity of the CAN High and CAN Low wires end-to-end between the EDC and the IC. Repair any breaks or high-resistance areas in the harness.

  5. Check for Shorts

    Verify that neither the CAN High nor CAN Low lines are shorted to ground or to battery voltage.

  6. Reassemble and Clear Codes

    Reconnect the battery. Use the New Holland Electronic Service Tool (EST) or a compatible CAN-bus DTC eraser to clear the inactive codes.

  7. Test Operation

    Start the machine and monitor the dash. If the code returns immediately, the EDC may require a software re-flash by a dealer, or one of the modules (EDC or IC) may have an internal hardware failure.
