New Holland ICU 14007 – ICU: Engine Over speeding

Issue description

This code is triggered when the engine RPM exceeds the maximum safe operating limit programmed into the system. This condition can be caused by mechanical failures (like a surging fuel pump), electrical faults (erratic speed sensor signals), or external physical forces (such as a heavy towed implement pushing the tractor downhill).

Check the cause

  1. Rule Out Operator/Terrain Error: Check with the operator to see if the machine was being driven down a steep slope with a heavy towed load. Towed vehicles without proper trailer brakes can push the tractor, causing the wheels to back-drive the transmission and overspeed the engine.

  2. Check PTO Load Dynamics: Sudden removal of a heavy load on PTO-driven equipment can cause temporary engine surging and overspeeding.

  3. Monitor Engine Behavior: Observe the engine at idle and under load. Look for symptoms of governor failure, such as engine speed surging, 'hunting' for idle, or inconsistent power delivery.

  4. Inspect the Engine Speed Sensor: Check the engine speed sensor (crankshaft/camshaft RPM sensor) and its wiring harness. An erratic, shorted, or failing sensor can send false high-RPM spikes to the GOV, triggering the code without a physical overspeed event.

Repair steps

  1. Clear and Retest

    If the overspeed was caused by a one-off terrain event (coasting downhill), clear the DTC from the ICU and test-drive the machine under normal conditions to verify the code does not return.

  2. Sensor Replacement

    If diagnostic tests reveal erratic RPM signals on the CAN-bus while the engine sounds normal, disconnect the battery, remove the faulty engine speed sensor, and install a new OEM sensor. Ensure the harness connector is clean and free of corrosion.

  3. Governor / Injection Pump Rebuild

    If the engine is physically surging or failing to govern RPMs properly, the fuel injection pump and governor components are likely worn. The injection pump must be removed and sent to a specialized diesel shop. The governor components must be inspected, worn parts replaced, and the pump recalibrated on a test stand to meet original OEM specifications.

  4. Post-Repair Diagnostics

    Following any repairs involving the ICU or engine controller, conduct a thorough diagnostic sweep to ensure all connections are secure and no secondary codes (such as GOV communication errors) are present.
