New Holland ICU 14011 – ICU (Instrument Cluster Unit / Instrumentation Control Unit): Communications Lost with Vehicle Data Bus 1 and ALL other controllers.
Issue description
This is a critical Controller Area Network (CAN) bus failure. The Instrument Cluster Unit is reporting that it can no longer communicate with any other control modules (such as the Engine ECU, Transmission controller, Armrest controller, etc.) on Vehicle Data Bus 1. This typically indicates a physical break in the CAN bus lines, a short circuit on the network, a missing terminating resistor, or a total loss of power/ground to the main data bus.

Check the cause
Verify the battery is fully charged and the alternator is outputting correctly, as low voltage can cause modules to drop off the network
Check all cab and chassis fuse panels for a blown fuse supplying power to the CAN bus or a primary controller
Perform a CAN Bus Resistance Test: with the machine off and battery disconnected, measure resistance between CAN High and CAN Low pins at the diagnostic connector (should be approximately 60 ohms). If it reads ~120 ohms, one of the two terminating resistors is broken or disconnected. If it reads 0 ohms, the CAN High and CAN Low wires are shorted together.
Visually inspect the main wiring harnesses for chafing, rodent damage, or melting, particularly where the harness routes near the engine block, transmission housing, or cab pivot points
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn off the master disconnect switch or disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical spikes.
Isolate the Short/Break
If the CAN bus resistance test failed, begin unplugging controllers on Data Bus 1 one at a time (Engine ECU, Transmission TCU, Armrest ARU). Re-check the resistance after unplugging each one. If the resistance returns to normal (60 ohms), the last module unplugged (or its immediate wiring) is internally shorted and pulling the network down.
Repair Wiring
If a damaged section of the harness is found (e.g., rubbed bare against the chassis), cut out the damaged section, solder in new twisted-pair CAN wire, and seal it with dual-wall adhesive heat shrink.
Clean Connectors
Disconnect the main harness at the ICU and spray the pins with electronic contact cleaner. Look for pushed-back pins, green corrosion, or moisture ingress. Apply dielectric grease and reconnect.
Verify Repair
Reconnect the battery, turn the key to the ON position, and check the diagnostic display. The ICU 14011 code should change from "Active" to "Inactive/Stored." Clear the inactive codes.
