New Holland ICU 14016 – ICU: Engine shutdown activated

Issue description

This code indicates that the machine's control system has initiated an automatic engine shutdown procedure to protect the engine or transmission from catastrophic failure. This code is a direct result of a Level 1 Critical Warning triggered by very high engine coolant temperature, very low engine oil pressure, very high engine intake air-to-air temperature, or very high transmission oil temperature.

Check the cause

  1. Check for Secondary Codes: Scan the ICU and Engine ECU for accompanying fault codes (e.g., ENG 143 for low oil pressure, ENG 235/2117 for low coolant level) to pinpoint the exact system at fault.

  2. Verify Fluid Levels: Manually check the engine oil dipstick, engine coolant reservoir, and transmission fluid levels. Top up any low fluids immediately.

  3. Mechanical Pressure/Temperature Test: If the oil level is fine, hook up a mechanical oil pressure gauge to verify if the engine is actually losing oil pressure or if the sensor is lying. Do the same with a temperature gun for the coolant and transmission housings.

  4. Inspect Wiring & Connections: Inspect the wiring harnesses connecting the engine oil pressure switch, coolant temperature sensor, intake air temperature sensor, and transmission oil temperature sensor to the ICU. Look for chafed wires, short circuits to ground, or corroded connector pins.

Repair steps

  1. Identify the Faulty Circuit

    Based on your diagnostic checks, isolate whether the issue is a genuine mechanical overheating/pressure loss issue or a faulty sensor/wiring issue.

  2. Repair Mechanical Issues (If Applicable)

    If the engine is genuinely overheating or losing oil pressure, you must repair the mechanical root cause (e.g., replace a failed water pump, clear a blocked radiator, or replace a failing oil pump) before clearing the code.

  3. Replace the Faulty Sensor

    If mechanical gauges show normal operating parameters but the ICU reads a critical failure, replace the corresponding sensor (e.g., Engine Oil Pressure Switch or Coolant Temperature Sensor).

  4. Check the Harness

    If a new sensor does not resolve the reading, use a multimeter to check the 5V reference and ground circuits between the sensor pigtail and the ICU. Repair any open or shorted wires.

  5. Clear Codes and Test

    Once the repair is made, clear the ICU 14016 code (and any related INST/ENG codes) using a diagnostic tool. Run the machine up to operating temperature and verify that the instrument cluster readings remain in the normal range and the shutdown does not reactivate.
