ICU 14018

New Holland ICU 14018 – Instrument Control Unit (ICU) / Digital Instrument Cluster: GOV Off Line

Issue description

Controller Area Network (CAN) bus communication failure. The Instrument Control Unit is no longer receiving valid data messages (such as engine speed, oil pressure, and coolant temperature) from the Engine Governor.

Applies to these machines

  • New Holland T7 Series
  • New Holland T8 Series

Check the cause

  1. Check for accompanying 'Off Line' codes (e.g., ICU 14013 or ICU 14019) to determine if the entire CAN bus network is down or just the Engine ECU branch.

  2. Verify battery voltage and ensure the Engine ECU is receiving proper power and ground (check for blown fuses or bad relays).

  3. Perform a CAN bus resistance test with the battery disconnected by measuring across the CAN High and CAN Low pins at the diagnostic connector (should read approximately 60 ohms).

  4. Visually inspect the wiring harness routing to the Engine ECU for chafing, rodent damage, or melted insulation.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Turn off the ignition and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes during testing.

  2. Inspect Fuses/Relays

Locate the main power distribution box and test the fuses and relays responsible for powering the Engine ECU. Replace any blown fuses.

  3. Inspect Connectors

Disconnect the main wiring harness from the Engine ECU and the ICU. Inspect the connector pins for corrosion, moisture ingress, or pushed-back pins. Clean with contact cleaner if necessary.

  4. Test Harness Continuity

Using a multimeter, perform a continuity test on the CAN High and CAN Low wires between the Engine ECU connector and the ICU connector. Repair any open circuits or shorts to ground.

  5. Check Terminating Resistors

If the CAN bus resistance is 120 ohms instead of 60 ohms, locate and replace the failed 120-ohm terminating resistor on the Engine ECU side of the harness.

  6. Reassemble and Clear Codes

Reconnect all harnesses and the battery. Connect the Electronic Service Tool (EST) / diagnostic laptop to clear the DTCs.

  7. Test Run

Start the tractor. If the wiring is intact, power is verified, and the code immediately returns, the Engine ECU has likely suffered an internal hardware failure and must be replaced and reprogrammed.
