The Tractor Data Bus (TDB) communication link between the instrumentation controller and the hitch controller has been interrupted or lost.

   Verify if the hitch controller is functioning at all (e.g., does the hitch respond to manual override or other inputs?).

   Inspect the Tractor Data Bus (TDB) wiring harness connections between the instrumentation controller and the hitch controller for continuity and shorts.

   Check the connector to the hitch controller (often designated as connector C059 in some harness schematics) to ensure it is secure.

   Inspect all relevant connector ends for damaged, pushed-back, bent, or corroded pins.

   Access the Controllers

   Locate the Instrumentation Controller (usually in the dash/console) and the Hitch Controller (often located near the rear of the tractor or integrated into the armrest ECU depending on the exact model).

   Clean and Reseat Connections

   Disconnect the wiring harnesses for both controllers. Clean the mating pins and connectors with electrical contact cleaner.

   Test the Harness

   Using a multimeter, test the CAN/Data Bus lines between the Instrumentation Controller and the Hitch Controller for open circuits or high resistance. Repair any damaged wiring.

   Verify Power and Ground

   Ensure the Hitch Controller is receiving proper operating voltage (usually 8V or 12V depending on the pinout) and has a solid ground. A controller without power cannot communicate on the bus.

   Replace Faulty Module

   If the wiring harness, power, and grounds are all intact but the INST 12031 code persists, the failure is internal. You will need to replace either the Hitch Controller or the Instrumentation Controller (whichever is failing to send/receive the handshake).
