New Holland INST 12051 – Instrumentation Controller (INST): Communications Lost with PTO Controller
Issue description
The CAN data bus communication has been interrupted or lost between the tractor's instrumentation controller and the Power Take-Off (PTO) controller.

Check the cause
Check PTO Controller Function: Verify if the PTO controller has power by checking the LED status lamp on the controller itself.
Inspect Connectors: Ensure the main connector (C056) to the PTO controller is securely plugged in and inspect ends for damaged, bent, pushed-back, or corroded pins.
Check the Data Bus Terminators: Test the passive terminator at the front of the tractor (Connector C205) for proper voltage and ground (Pin 1: 12V, Pin 2: 2.5-4V, Pin 3: ground, Pin 4: 1-2.5V).
Contextual Code Check: Note if other codes are present (e.g., TRANS 12011/12031, PTO 54120/54140, AUX 12011) to determine if the issue is a main bus failure or localized to the PTO controller.
Repair steps
Access the Modules
Locate the PTO controller and the Instrumentation controller on your specific tractor model.
Harness Inspection
Disconnect connector C056 at the PTO controller. Clean out any dirt, moisture, or corrosion. Reconnect securely to see if communication is restored.
Verify Power and Ground
Test the power (B+) and ground circuits feeding the PTO controller. A controller with a blown fuse or bad ground will drop off the CAN bus, triggering this code.
Test CAN Bus Wiring
Using a multimeter, perform continuity checks on the Yellow and Green CAN bus wires between the INST controller and the PTO controller. Repair any open circuits, shorts to ground, or shorts to voltage.
Replace the Controller
If the wiring harness, terminators, power, and ground all test perfectly within specification, the PTO controller has suffered an internal failure and must be replaced.
Recalibrate/Clear Codes
After replacing the controller or repairing the wiring, clear the fault codes via the instrument cluster diagnostic menu and cycle the key to verify INST 12051 does not return.
