New Holland INST 12053 – INST: Communications Lost with Vehicle Data Bus 2

The module logging the code has stopped receiving Controller Area Network (CAN) messages from the main communication system (Data Bus 2) within the allotted time limit.

   Verify active status: Clear the code and see if it returns, as CAN codes can log temporarily during module programming or low voltage events.

   Check for multiple codes: Look for other CAN bus fault codes (e.g., INST 12071, INST 12091). Multiple offline modules indicate a central wiring problem or failed terminating resistor.

   Measure CAN bus resistance: With the machine powered off, measure resistance between CAN HI and CAN LO pins. A healthy circuit reads approximately 60 ohms. ~120 ohms indicates a failed terminating resistor or open circuit. < 5 ohms indicates a short circuit.

   Inspect connectors: Check connectors at the Instrument Cluster, main ECU, and terminating resistors for pushed-out pins, corrosion, or loose fits.

   Disconnect Battery

   Always disconnect battery power before servicing CAN bus electrical components.

   Locate the Fault

   Based on your resistance test, trace the Data Bus 2 wiring harness.

   Test Terminating Resistors

   If your resistance was 120 ohms, locate the terminating resistors at each end of the CAN bus harness. Unplug them and test them individually. They should each read exactly 120 ohms. Replace any resistor that reads open or out of spec.

   Repair Wiring

   If the resistors are good but the circuit resistance is wrong, physically inspect the wiring harness between the Instrument Cluster and the ECU for chafing, pinch points, or breaks. Repair or replace the damaged section of the harness.

   Clean Connections

   Disconnect the Instrument Cluster. Clean the connector pins with electrical contact cleaner and ensure the harness seats tightly.

   Retest

   Reconnect the battery, turn the key on, and clear the fault codes. If INST 12053 returns and the wiring/resistors are 100% verified, the Instrument Cluster itself has likely suffered an internal failure and must be replaced.
