INST 12091

New Holland INST 12091 – Instrumentation Controller (INST): Communication Lost With Engine Controller

Issue description

The CAN-Bus data link between the instrumentation cluster and the engine control unit (ECU) has been interrupted or has failed.

Applies to these machines

  • TG230
  • TG255
  • TG285
  • T8010

  • MXM models

Check the cause

  1. Check ECU connectors to verify that the main wiring harness connectors to the engine controller are fully plugged in, locked, and free of corrosion or pushed-out pins.

  2. Verify ECU power and ground to ensure the engine controller is receiving unswitched power, keyed power, and has a solid ground.

  3. Test the CAN-Bus data link communication lines between the engine controller and the instrumentation controller for continuity, opens, shorts to ground, or shorts to voltage.

  4. Check for accompanying codes (e.g., INST 12071 or INST 12101) to determine if multiple modules are offline, indicating a central CAN-Bus wiring fault rather than a single module failure.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Battery

Always disconnect the battery before unplugging control modules to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Inspect and Clean

Disconnect the engine controller and instrumentation controller. Spray the connectors with electrical contact cleaner and inspect for moisture, corrosion, or bent pins.

  3. Repair Wiring

If the continuity test reveals a broken wire or short in the CAN-Bus harness, splice and repair the affected section of the wiring harness according to OEM electrical schematics.

  4. Replace Faulty Module

If the wiring, power, and grounds are 100% intact, the failure lies internally within either the Engine Controller (most common if the engine also won't start) or the Instrumentation Controller. Replace the faulty module.

  5. Clear Codes

After repair, use a diagnostic tool (like the CNH Electronic Service Tool or a CAN-Bus DTC eraser) to clear the inactive codes from the system.
