New Holland INST 13012 – Instrumentation Controller: Engine Coolant Temperature sensor voltage is too high

The system detects an open circuit or a short to a power source (+V) in the engine coolant temperature sensor's circuit.

   Test the resistance of the engine coolant temperature sensor using a multimeter to check for internal failure

   Inspect the wiring harness running from the sensor to the instrument controller for an open circuit or short to power (+V)

   Verify the instrumentation controller functionality if the sensor and wiring are both good

   Locate the Sensor

   Find the engine coolant temperature sensor on the engine block or thermostat housing.

   Test the Sensor

   Disconnect the sensor's pigtail connector. Measure the resistance across the sensor's terminals. If the resistance is out of range (infinite resistance indicates an internal open), replace the engine coolant temperature sensor.

   Inspect and Repair Wiring

   If the sensor tests within normal limits, use a multimeter to check the continuity of the wiring harness back to the instrumentation controller. Test for an open circuit (0 continuity on the signal or ground wire) or a short to voltage. Repair any chafed, broken, or corroded wires and ensure the connector pins are clean and tight.

   Test the Instrument Controller

   If the sensor and the wiring harness are both fully functional, the fault lies within the instrument controller. The controller may need to be reflashed, repaired, or replaced by a dealer.

   Clear Codes

   Once the repair is made, cycle the key and clear the stored INST 13012 fault code from the system.
