INST 13040

New Holland INST 13040 – Instrumentation Controller (INST): Air to Air Intake Temperature sensor is failed in the Engine Controller

Issue description

This code indicates that the engine controller has detected a failure, out-of-range reading, or loss of signal from the Air to Air Intake Temperature sensor (also known as the charge air temperature sensor).

Applies to these machines

  • TG210
  • TG215
  • TG230
  • TG245
  • TG255
  • TG285
  • T8010
  • T8020
  • T8030
  • T8040
  • T8050
  • T9020
  • TJ series

Check the cause

  1. Check Sensor Resistance: Disconnect the Air to Air Intake Temperature sensor and test its internal resistance with a multimeter. Compare the reading against the OEM specification for the ambient temperature. If it reads as an open circuit (infinite resistance) or a dead short, the sensor has failed internally.

  2. Inspect the Wiring Harness: Check the wiring harness running from the engine controller/instrumentation controller to the sensor. Look for chafed wires, pinched lines, or melted insulation that could cause a short to ground or an open circuit.

  3. Check Connectors: Inspect the sensor connector and the ECU pins for corrosion, bent pins, or moisture ingress.

  4. Verify Controller Output: Ensure the controller is sending the proper 5V reference signal to the sensor connector when the key is in the ON position.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the machine and remove the key. Disconnect the negative battery terminal if you will be repairing wiring.

  2. Locate the Sensor

Locate the Air to Air Intake Temperature sensor, which is typically threaded into the intake manifold or the charge air cooler (intercooler) piping just before the intake manifold.

  3. Remove the Sensor

Depress the locking tab on the electrical connector and pull it off the sensor. Use a deep socket or wrench to unthread the failed sensor from the intake piping.

  4. Install the New Sensor

Thread the new sensor into the port. Tighten to the OEM torque specification (do not over-tighten, as these are often brass or plastic and can snap).

  5. Reconnect and Clear Codes

Reconnect the electrical harness. Reconnect the battery, turn the key to the ON position, and use a diagnostic tool to clear the INST 13040 code from the Instrumentation and Engine controllers.

  6. Test Run

Start the engine and verify that the code does not return and that the intake temperature readings on the diagnostic tool or dash are plausible.
