New Holland INST 3010 – Instrumentation Controller (INST): PTO Shaft Speed Sensor Failure

The Data Bus has signaled that the PTO shaft speed data is either in error or completely unavailable from the PTO controller.

   Inspect connector ends for damaged, bent, or dislocated pins at the sensor and the PTO controller

   Verify sensor placement to ensure the PTO shaft speed sensor and the PTO dual speed (shaft size) sensor have not been installed in reverse (swapped connections)

   Check the wiring harness to the PTO shaft speed sensor

   Check wiring continuity from Pin 10 of connector C056 (at the controller) to Pin A of connector C145 (at the sensor)

   Check wiring continuity from Pin B of connector C145 to the chassis ground

   Disconnect the sensor and check its internal resistance (should measure approximately 3,000 ohms)

   Park the tractor

   Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, and engage the parking brake.

   Locate components

   Locate the PTO controller and the PTO shaft speed sensor on the transmission housing.

   Disconnect wiring harness

   Disconnect the wiring harness from the PTO shaft speed sensor (Connector C145).

   Perform tests

   Perform the resistance test (3 K ohms) and wiring continuity checks outlined in the diagnostic section.

   Evaluate sensor

   If the wiring is intact but the sensor fails the resistance test (or fails to output 3-80V AC peak-to-peak when the PTO is running), the sensor is faulty.

   Remove sensor

   Unbolt and remove the failed variable reluctance speed sensor from the transmission housing.

   Install new sensor

   Install the new OEM speed sensor and torque to factory specifications.

   Reconnect wiring harness

   Reconnect the wiring harness, ensuring the connector is fully seated and locked.

9. 9

   Clear fault codes and test

   Clear the fault codes from the Instrumentation Controller and test-run the PTO to verify the INST 3010 code does not return.
