New Holland INST 3020 – Instrumentation Controller (INST): Engine Speed sensor is failed in the Engine Controller

Issue description

The Tractor Data Bus has signaled that the engine speed data is either in error or completely unavailable from the engine controller. The system is detecting 0 RPM or an extremely low engine speed while the machine is supposed to be active.

Check the cause

  1. Verify Engine Operation: Make sure the engine is actually running properly and hasn't simply stalled, which will cause the transmission controller to detect 0 RPM.

  2. Check the Sensor: Inspect the engine speed sensor (crankshaft position sensor) and its wiring harness. Look for severed wires, a multi-pin connector that has vibrated loose, or a short to ground.

  3. Check Data Bus Communication: Verify that the Tractor Data Bus is communicating properly between the Engine Controller and the Instrumentation Controller.

  4. Software Check: Ensure the Engine ECU software is up to date, as a software execution error in the engine controller can also trigger this fault.
