INST 3022

New Holland INST 3022 – INST (Instrumentation / Dash) Controller: Engine Overspeed Error

Issue description

The engine has exceeded its maximum allowable speed limit. This is frequently an evaluation error caused by a failure or phase mismatch between the engine's speed sensors (crankshaft and camshaft sensors) rather than a true mechanical overspeed event.

Applies to these machines

  • T7 series
  • T8000 series
  • T8030
  • T8040
  • T9000 series
  • T9020
  • TG series
  • TG215
  • TG245
  • MX/Magnum series
  • CR9090
  • CX8080
  • CX8090 Elevation Tier 4A
  • 9090X grape harvesters

Check the cause

  1. Check the engine control system, specifically focusing on the Crankshaft Speed Sensor and the Camshaft Speed Sensor.

  2. Verify signal phasing between the crank and cam sensors, as the error can trigger if these signals are defective or not in the correct phase.

  3. Inspect the wiring harnesses connecting the speed sensors to the Engine Controller for loose connections, corrosion, or damage.

Repair steps

  1. Test and Replace Sensors

If diagnostic testing reveals a failure in the Crank Speed Sensor or Camshaft Speed Sensor, replace the defective sensor(s).

  2. Software Reload

If the sensors and wiring are intact but the fault persists (indicating an Engine Crank Speed Fault at the controller level), use the dealer service tool to reload the Engine Dataset.

  3. Replace Engine Controller

If reloading the dataset does not clear the fault, the Engine Controller (EDC) must be replaced.

  4. Restore Parameters

If the EDC is replaced, you must follow the appropriate service tool procedure to restore the engine's self-learning parameters.
