New Holland MFD 6002 – TCU (Transmission Control Unit): Rear Diff Lock solenoid has failed

Issue description

The system has detected an electrical fault in the circuit responsible for actuating the rear differential lock.

Applies to these machines

  • New Holland T8.xxx Series (e.g., T8.275, T8.300, T8.320, T8.330, T8.360, T8.390, T8.420)
  • New Holland T9 Series
  • New Holland TG Series (TG210, TG230, etc.)

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the rear differential lock solenoid on the transmission/rear axle valve block. Disconnect the 2-pin plug and check for loose wires, corrosion, moisture intrusion, or bent pins.

  2. Perform a coil resistance test using a multimeter across the two pins of the solenoid coil. A healthy OEM 12V DC PWM solenoid should measure approximately 6.8 to 7.3 Ohms. If it reads open or shorted, the coil has failed.

  3. Perform a harness continuity test between the solenoid connector and the TCU pins. Check for any shorts to ground or chafed wires along the chassis.

  4. Verify the TCU. If the wiring harness is intact and the solenoid coil is within specification, the fault points to an internal failure of the TCU driver.

Repair steps

  1. Secure the tractor

    Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine.

  2. Relieve hydraulic pressure

    Relieve any residual hydraulic pressure in the system.

  3. Locate the solenoid

    Locate the rear differential lock solenoid valve assembly on the rear axle/transmission control block.

  4. Disconnect harness

    Disconnect the 2-pin electrical harness from the solenoid.

  5. Clean the area

    Clean the area around the valve to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system.

  6. Remove faulty solenoid

    Unbolt or unscrew the faulty solenoid valve cartridge from the manifold block.

  7. Lubricate O-rings

    Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid valve with clean hydraulic fluid (e.g., Mastertran Ultraction).

  8. Install new solenoid

    Thread the new solenoid into the block and tighten to the manufacturer's torque specification.

  9. Reconnect harness

    Reconnect the electrical harness, ensuring the weather seal clicks into place.

  10. Test the repair

    Turn the key on, clear the MFD 6002 fault code via the cab display, and test the differential lock engagement to verify the repair.
