New Holland MFD 6003 – TCU (Transmission Control Unit): Brake light relay fault
Issue description
The system has detected an electrical anomaly in the circuit controlling the brake light relay. The specific failure modes logged under this code are a short to 12 volts, an open circuit, or a short to ground.
Applies to these machines
1 machine- New Holland T8.xxx Series (T8.275, T8.300, T8.330, T8.360, T8.390, T8.420)
Check the cause
Swap the brake light relay (K-008) with a known good identical relay (12V, 20A Micro relay) from a non-critical circuit to see if the fault clears
Inspect the relay socket for pushed-out pins, corrosion, or signs of melting/arcing
Test the relay coil control wire coming from the TCU for continuity, short to ground, or short to 12V using a multimeter
Verify that the fuses supplying power to the brake light circuit and the TCU are intact
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the battery ground cable to prevent electrical spikes.
Access the Relay Panel
Open the cab fuse and relay distribution box.
Locate the Relay
Find the Brake Light Relay (K-008).
Replace the Relay
If the relay failed the swap test or bench testing, replace it with a new OEM 12V 20A micro relay.
Harness Repair (If Relay is Good)
If the relay is functional, the fault lies in the wiring. Trace the wiring harness from the relay block back to the TCU. Look for pinch points, chafed insulation rubbing against the chassis, or loose connectors.
Repair Wiring
Splice and heat-shrink any broken or exposed wires. Ensure all connector pins are seated firmly in their plastic housings.
Reassemble and Clear Codes
Reconnect the battery, turn the ignition on, and clear the inactive fault codes from the TCU.
Verify Operation
Depress the brake pedals to ensure the brake lights illuminate and verify that the MFD 6003 code does not return.
