New Holland NH 1003 – XCM (Multi-function Control Module) or EDC (Electronic Draft Control): Speed sensor error

The electronic control system is not receiving a valid signal from the wheel speed sensor or transmission/rear axle speed sensor. The system detects that the sensor circuit is either open, shorted, or providing an erratic/implausible reading compared to expected parameters. This failure directly disables or impairs the tractor's slip control functionality.

   Visually inspect the wheel/axle speed sensor on the rear axle housing or transmission casing for physical damage, chafing, or broken wires.

   Disconnect the sensor and inspect the connector pins for corrosion, moisture, or loose connections.

   Remove the sensor and check the magnetic tip for metal shavings or heavy debris that could blind it from reading the speed capturing gear.

   Ensure the true ground speed radar (if equipped) is functioning, as radar disconnection (Code 1002) often accompanies or complicates slip control diagnostics.

   Preparation

   Safely park the machine on level ground, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine.

   Access the Sensor

   Locate the faulty speed sensor on the rear axle housing or transmission casing (consult the specific model's service manual for exact placement).

   Removal

   Disconnect the electrical harness connector from the sensor. Unbolt the retaining fastener and carefully pull the sensor straight out of the housing.

   Installation

   Lubricate the O-ring on the new OEM speed sensor. Insert it into the housing, ensuring it seats fully to maintain the correct air gap with the internal speed gear. Secure the retaining bolt.

   Reconnection

   Plug the wiring harness back into the sensor, ensuring the weather-tight seal clicks into place.

   Clear Codes & Test

   Connect a diagnostic tool (such as the Jaltest diagnostic tool or CNH Electronic Service Tool) to clear the NH 1003 fault code from the XCM/EDC. Perform a test drive to verify that the speedometer registers correctly and slip control functionality is restored.
