New Holland NH 1004 – EDC (Electronic Draft Control) module or TCU (Tractor Controller Unit) / Transmission Controller: Wheel speed sensor - signal too high
Issue description
The control module is receiving a voltage signal from the wheel or transmission speed sensor that exceeds the maximum expected threshold. This condition is typically caused by a short circuit to power (such as a short to a 12V or 5V reference wire) in the sensor harness, or an internal failure of the sensor itself.

Check the cause
Inspect the wheel/transmission speed sensor wiring harness for chafing, pinched wires, or melted insulation that could cause a short to power (+12V or 5V).
Disconnect the sensor and inspect the electrical connector for moisture, corrosion, or bent pins, which can bridge circuits and cause high voltage readings.
Turn the key to the ON position (engine off) and use a multimeter to verify the 5V reference voltage and ground at the sensor connector.
Check the sensor's output signal while manually rotating the wheel or shaft. If the signal voltage is stuck high and does not fluctuate, the sensor is internally shorted and must be replaced.
Repair steps
Preparation
Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.
Locate the Sensor
Locate the wheel/transmission speed sensor. Depending on the exact model, it is typically mounted on the side of the transmission housing, the 4WD drop box, or the rear axle housing.
Disconnect
Unplug the electrical harness connector from the speed sensor.
Removal
Remove the retaining bolt securing the sensor to the housing. Carefully twist and pull the old sensor out of the mounting port.
Clean
Wipe the mounting surface clean. Ensure no dirt or debris falls into the transmission or axle housing.
Installation
Lubricate the O-ring on the new sensor with a small amount of clean transmission/hydraulic oil. Insert the new sensor into the port and tighten the retaining bolt.
Reconnect
Plug the electrical harness back into the sensor until it clicks securely.
Clear and Test
Reconnect the battery. Use a diagnostic tool or the tractor's onboard display to clear the NH 1004 fault code. Test drive the tractor to ensure the speedometer registers correctly and the code does not return.
