New Holland NH 1005 – Transmission Control Unit (TCU) or Electronic Draft Control (EDC): Speed sensor signal too High
Issue description
The signal voltage coming from the speed sensor (typically the wheel speed sensor or transmission speed sensor) is exceeding the maximum expected threshold. This usually points to a short circuit to power (+12V or +5V reference) in the sensor wiring, a failed sensor internally shorting to the reference voltage, or a controller issue.

Check the cause
Inspect the speed sensor wiring harness routing from the sensor to the ECU for chafed wires, melted insulation, or pinch points that could cause a short to power.
Disconnect the speed sensor connector and check for water intrusion, corrosion, or bent pins bridging the signal wire to the power supply wire.
With the key ON and the sensor disconnected, use a multimeter to measure the voltage at the harness connector. Verify that the reference voltage (usually 5V or 8V) and ground are within specification. If the signal wire shows high voltage while disconnected, there is a short to power in the harness.
If the harness tests good, evaluate the sensor itself, as the internal circuitry has likely failed and shorted to the reference voltage.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical spikes.
Locate the Sensor
Locate the faulty speed sensor on the transmission housing, axle, or wheel hub (refer to the specific model's service manual for exact placement).
Removal
Disconnect the electrical connector. Clean the area around the sensor to prevent dirt from falling into the housing. Remove the retaining bolt(s) and carefully pull the sensor straight out.
Harness Repair
If the diagnostic checks revealed a short in the wiring, cut out the damaged section and splice in new wire using weather-sealed heat-shrink connectors, or replace the connector pigtail.
Installation
Lubricate the O-ring on the new speed sensor with clean transmission/hydraulic fluid. Insert the sensor into the port and tighten the retaining bolt to the OEM torque specification.
Reconnection
Plug the electrical connector back in, ensuring the locking tab clicks into place.
Clear Codes
Reconnect the battery. Turn the key ON and use a diagnostic tool (or the tractor's onboard diagnostic display) to clear the NH 1005 fault code.
Test Drive
Operate the tractor to verify that the speedometer registers correctly and the fault code does not return.
