New Holland NH 1013 – Hitch Controller (EHR - Electronic Hitch Regulation) or Armrest Controller (ARM): Drop rate potentiometer signal too high

Issue description

This code indicates that the signal voltage from the drop rate potentiometer (which controls the lowering speed of the rear 3-point hitch) is exceeding the maximum expected threshold, often due to a short to +12 volt. When this fault is active, the tractor's computer cannot accurately determine the operator's requested hitch drop speed, which may cause the hitch to default to a safe, slow drop rate or disable the drop function entirely.

Check the cause

  1. Locate the drop rate potentiometer on the right-hand armrest console or side EDC control panel and inspect the 3-pin weather-proof connector for corrosion, pushed-out pins, or moisture.

  2. Use a multimeter to check the signal wire between the potentiometer and the Hitch/Armrest controller for chafing or shorting to a 12V power source.

  3. Verify that the potentiometer is receiving the correct 5V reference voltage and has a solid ground. A lost ground will cause the signal voltage to float high.

  4. Disconnect the sensor and measure the resistance across its sweep. It should show a smooth, linear change in resistance (typically 0-3000 Ohm or 1000 Ohm range) without any dead spots or infinite resistance spikes.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Access the Sensor

    Remove the trim panels on the armrest or side console to access the underside of the hitch control dials.

  3. Remove the Faulty Potentiometer

    Disconnect the 3-pin wiring harness plug from the sensor. Remove the retaining nut or mounting screws holding the potentiometer to the control dial assembly.

  4. Install the New Part

    Insert the new potentiometer, ensuring the unblocked hole design or keyed shaft aligns correctly with the physical dial. Secure the mounting hardware.

  5. Reconnect

    Plug the 3-pin connector back in and reassemble the console trim. Reconnect the battery.

  6. Calibration

    You must perform a Hydraulic Lift Autocalibration (often associated with code 1024). Follow the specific calibration sequence in your operator's display to teach the controller the new potentiometer's sweep.
