New Holland NH 1021 – Hitch Controller: Position / draft control potentiometer too low

Issue description

The voltage signal returning from the 3-point hitch position sensor or the draft control potentiometer has fallen below the acceptable minimum threshold, indicating a short to ground, an open circuit, a disconnected sensor, or a completely failed potentiometer.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness and connector at the hitch rockshaft position sensor and draft control knob for corrosion, moisture, or backed-out pins.

  2. Test potentiometer resistance using a multimeter (rockshaft position potentiometer should read approximately 1,000 ohms across pins A to C; in-cab load/draft control potentiometers typically read around 10,000 ohms).

  3. Verify the cab ground strap is secure and clean, as poor grounding causes erratic EDC behavior.

  4. Attempt a hydraulic lift autocalibration to see if the controller simply lost its position memory before replacing parts.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Park the tractor on a level surface, lower the 3-point hitch fully to relieve hydraulic pressure, turn off the engine, and engage the parking brake.

  2. Locate the Faulty Sensor

    Determine if the fault is at the rear rockshaft position sensor or the in-cab draft sensitivity knob based on your multimeter tests.

  3. Remove the Sensor

    Disconnect the electrical harness from the potentiometer. Remove the mounting screws or retaining bracket holding the sensor in place.

  4. Install the New Sensor

    Install the replacement potentiometer, ensuring proper mechanical orientation (as some sensors have a specific 360-degree mechanical travel alignment). Secure the mounting hardware and plug in the electrical connector.

  5. Perform EDC Hitch Calibration

    Recalibrate the hitch so the ECU learns the new high and low voltage limits. On many models, this is done via the dash display (often Mode 11 or Mode 12). Follow the on-screen prompts to cycle the hitch fully up and fully down until the controller captures the new limits.

  6. Clear Codes

    Clear the stored NH 1021 fault code and test the implement hitch under load to ensure smooth operation.
